Prof. Paul S D'Urso MBBS (Hons) PhD FRACS
Consultant Neurosurgeon

Prof. Paul S D'Urso is an Australian-born and educated Consultant Neurosurgeon who graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School with Honours in 1988. Prof. D'Urso completed 4 years of general surgical training before undertaking PhD research to pioneer the technology of stereolithographic biomodelling. Prof. D'Urso then went on to complete neurosurgical specialisation in Brisbane and Auckland. After gaining a Neurosurgical Fellowship from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Mr D'Urso undertook additional advanced sub-specialty training in cerebrovascular and spinal surgery at the prestigious Cambridge University Academic Neurosurgery Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital in the United Kingdom. Prof. D'Urso was subsequently recruited to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne as a Consultant Neurosurgeon from 2001 to 2005. At the Alfred, he was the Director of Cerebrovascular Surgery and a foundation member of The Alfred Spine Service. Internationally recognised as one of Australia's leading Neurosurgeons, Prof. D'Urso now practices privately in Melbourne.

The success of Prof. D'Urso's research has established him as a world authority in neurosurgical technology. He has published and presented over 120 scientific papers and has been invited to speak at many international meetings. Prof. D'Urso holds multiple international patents and his research has featured in both domestic and international print and television media on numerous occasions. Prof. D'Urso has won over 30 prestigious research awards and prizes including the Medtronic International Young Inventor Prize.

Prof. D'Urso has successfully co-ordinated large Commonwealth-funded research and development projects and multi-centre international trials to develop biomodelling technology. Prof. D'Urso was an investigator in a large United States National Institute of Health-funded project studying the genetics of intracranial aneurysms. Prof. D'Urso co-authored the results from an Australian multi-centre project investigating new treatments for severe head injuries. Prof. D'Urso pioneered minimally invasive spinal surgery in Australia at The Epworth Richmond Hospital and established the Epworth Spine Technology Research Group. Prof. D’Urso’s commitment to research and teaching has been recognised by the Swinburne University of Technology by his appointment as an adjunct Professor.

Prof. D'Urso has been thoroughly trained in all aspects of cranial and spinal neurosurgery and has a particular interest in the critical implementation of new neurosurgical technologies and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Prof. D'Urso is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a member of the Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, Spine Society of Australasia, Victorian Neuroscience Centre, Monash Institute for Neurological Diseases, and the Australian Medical Association. Prof. D'Urso consults privately at the prestigious Epworth Centre in Richmond and Clarendon Street Specialist Centre in Frankston. D’Urso operates exclusively at the Epworth Private Hospital in Richmond.
